The Africa Institute for Research in Economics and Social Sciences (AIRESS) is pleased to host the 8th Biennial Conference of AfIELN at the UM6P Rabat Campus under the theme: “Africa and the Future of International Economic Law: Navigating Geopolitical Realignments, Sustainability Imperatives and Technological Disruptions.”
The conference opened with welcoming remarks by Karim El Aynaoui, Dean of FGSES and Executive Vice-President of UM6P, Harrison O. Mbori, representative of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), and Regis Simo, FHEA, President of AfIELN, who highlighted the importance of advancing African perspectives in shaping the future of international economic law.
The opening session was followed by a keynote address delivered by Prof. Olabisi D. Akinkugbe, who explored the challenges and opportunities arising from economic nationalism at the global and regional levels, and its implications for Africa’s industrialization and economic transformation.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in a series of thematic and parallel sessions covering a wide range of topics, including:
- Africa’s engagement in global economic governance
- Sustainable transitions and green industrial policies
- Digital trade and technological transformation
- Regional integration and trade governance
- Climate change and economic development
Taking place from 24–26 June, the conference brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, legal scholars, and students from across Africa and beyond to discuss the evolving landscape of international economic law and Africa’s role in shaping it.
