Dean's Conference Cycle

Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences is organizing a conference on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023 at 5:15 p.m on ''Fragmentation of the Global Economy''.

Our guest speaker for this event is Otaviano Canuto, Affiliate Professor at FGSES.

ABSTRACT

The global economy went through the perfect storm combination of a pandemic, war in Ukraine, manifestations of climate change, the emergence of the so-called ‘new Washington consensus’, and the ongoing technological rivalry. The rise of national security as a determinant of economic policies has risen as a justification for trade restrictions in those sectors where ‘dual use’ of technologies and goods and services for both civil and military reasons is possible. A resulting fragmentation tends to partially reverse the gains from globalization.
