Mehdi Bartal is an Assistant Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

Before joining UM6P, he worked as an economist at Banque de France in Paris and participated in many national and European projects related to macro-finance.

His research puts strong emphasis on income and wealth inequalities, and tackles macroeconomic questions such as: why is unemployment so costly for societies and how to design appropriate labor market policies to alleviate this cost ? How can we make sense of the relationship between labor market informality and economic development? Can the rise of telework have implications for central banks? How do marriage and divorce trends affect the macroeconomy?

He investigates these questions by combining heterogeneous agents models with microeconomic data for the US, France and Brazil, and has presented his work at leading international academic conferences.

He has taught several courses at Sciences Po Paris and Panthéon-Sorbonne University and he is currently teaching intermediate macroeconomics (Bachelor), applied macroeconomics (M.S.) and advanced macroeconomics (PhD) at UM6P.

Mehdi Bartal holds an engineering degree from École Spéciale des Travaux Publics de Paris and a PhD in economics from Paris School of Economics. He was Fulbright visiting scholar in the department of macroeconomics at the University of Pennsylvania.
