Contenu du cours / Course content
- Introduction : international political economy: the state of the sub- discipline, open economy politics, trade, immigration, and cross-border investment, open economy politics in the global economy
- Interest group models : commerce, coalitions, and factor mobility, foreign lobbies and human rights ratings, protection for sale empirical investigation, trade liberalization and the theory of endogenous protection, domestic influences on international trade policy, endogenous tariff theory, the political economy of immigration restriction
- Firm-based models/ Melitz model of trade
- Institutions: democracy & autocracy /other institutions and the new world order
- Ideas and foreign policy: an analytical framework
- International constraints vs power
- Individual preferences and trade-policy preferences
- International organizations and international political economics
- Reputation/ credible commitments
- Effectiveness of treaties/ international organizations
- Overlap between areas of international political economics
- International political economics and war/ aid
Objectifs du cours / Course objectives
This course examines how domestic and international politics influence the economic relations between states. It will address the major theoretical debates in the field and introduce the chief methodological approaches used in contemporary analyses. We will focus attention on four types of cross-border flows and the policies and international institutions that regulate them: the flow of goods (trade policy), the flow of capital (financial and exchange rate policy), the flow and location of production (foreign investment policy), and the flow of people (immigration policy).
