- Basic ideas of public choice and how models are used to help understand political processes and institutions,
- Individual rationality in rational choice models
- Simple model - Black’s median voter theorem
- Collective rationality: the Condorcet cycle, Arrow's theorem
- The problem of collective choice
- The collective action problem and strategies for overcoming it
- Two-party competition-probabilistic model and incomplete information about preferences
- Multi-party competition: Downsian models
- Principles underlying coalition theory
- Structure induced equilibrium
- Controlling the bureaucracy: the principal-agent model
- Rent seeking model
Objectifs du cours / Course objectives
This Module will be organized in the form of classroom courses and Recitations, which are completed with homework preparing both of them based on relevant educational material that each professor will select and provide to the students. Additional Personal works in the form of case studies will be prepared by the students under the supervision of the professor in charge of the course. The course consists of two formal evaluations: mid-term exam and final exam.
