Contenu du cours / Course content
National identities have a powerful grip on individual and collective consciousness, determining how members of a national entity perceive themselves as separate from members of other national entities. Nevertheless, nations have a relatively recent history and are the result of political, social, and symbolic processes involved in nation-building. Furthermore, changing trends in migration, the advent of globalization, and new ideological and cultural movements have not only problematized common perceptions of nationhood and identity, but also brought to the fore other emerging identities shaped by the media and popular culture. This course, therefore, examines such issues as national symbolism, race relations, migration, multiculturalism, and popular culture, where the notion of identity is mobilised and comes into play in support of a wide range of cultural and political projects.
