Contenu du cours / Course content
This course is an overview of the region called MENA with a focus on the political dynamics and systems during the20th.century. It begins with the historical background of the region during Ottoman and Moorish Empires: Maghreb, Egypt and Cham, Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Turkey. Then it moves on to an outline of the general conditions that shape the Colonial occupation and later, the formation of modern National States and the evolution of the Political systems. Pan Islamism, Pan Arabism and Pan Socialism ideologies in the “Arab World” with case studies are the heart of this course. Following an introductory and comparative look, the course will focus on the political systems and regimes from the 1950s to the present. In a historical perspective, this part will investigate the evolution of the National states building from colonialism to the dream of unity and the current nightmare of the “Arab spring” in several countries.
Objectifs du cours / Course objectives
This course is designed to assist students to acquire and demonstrate knowledge about:
- North Africa and Middle East history and politics during the 20th. Century
- Different political theories about societies and politics
- Basic concepts that have shaped the history and politics of MENA societies and that are important for understanding the current problems these societies confront
- The economic conditions of MENA region
- Governments and politics in the region
