Contenu du cours / Course content
The concept of civil society has attracted growing interest within academic circles, as single-issue political initiatives have come to the fore in recent decades. This course traces the evolution of civil society through different historical periods and political environments, examining the theoretical assumptions underpinning it. The emergence of a public sphere where citizens come together to debate and influence the affairs of their community and policy matters provides an important framework. Thus, concepts such as civic virtue, sociability, democratisation, development are addressed to better grasp what is at stake in associational activities. The course also examines the relation that civil society, the 3rd sector, has with the state, as well as the market or the sector of economic activity, to gauge the impact that associations have on policy, political systems, and economic development. Current issues, ranging from the increasing global reach of civil society to recent social protest movements, are discussed in the light of these profound conceptual and political implications.
